India Pins UN Security Council Seat Hope On AI-led Maritime Security Pitch

    New Delhi:

Maritime security and artificial intelligence (AI) will be central to India’s bid for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for 2028-29, according to the Indian envoy to the United Nations. Addressing a high-level debate at the council, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Harish Parvathaneni, emphasised that technology must enhance human security and make shared maritime commons safer, rather than more contested.

India also stressed the need for developing nations to gain access to necessary technology and training to participate in governance.

“India has identified AI (artificial intelligence) and maritime security as important priorities for its candidature to the Security Council for 2028-2029. Our objective is clear: technology must strengthen human security, not undermine it; it must expand opportunity, not inequality; and it must make our shared maritime commons safer, not more contested,” Parvathaneni said.

India is contesting the election next year for a non-permanent Council seat with a two-year term starting in 2028, polling for which will be conducted in June next year, where India and Tajikistan will compete for the sole seat in the Asia-Pacific Group category.

The Indian envoy highlighted the threat of cyber vulnerabilities and the importance of safeguarding freedom of navigation against attacks on commercial shipping. He also stressed that technological advances must not deepen existing disparities.

“Developing countries require access to technology, training and institutional capabilities to secure their maritime infrastructure and participate meaningfully in shaping technological governance,” Parvathaneni said.

Parvathaneni underscored the need to safeguard freedom of navigation and maritime commerce, saying recent attacks against commercial shipping have demonstrated how disruptions at critical maritime chokepoints can have consequences far beyond their immediate geography.

“They threaten seafarers, disrupt supply chains and disproportionately affect developing countries through higher costs and economic uncertainty,” he said, reiterating India’s strong condemnation of attacks against commercial vessels.

He recalled that External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Greece’s Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis had co-chaired a high-level discussion last month on AI and maritime security and said this was an opportunity to build on it.

The Council debate took place on a day when Iran’s Navy said three oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz had hit sea mines and were ablaze, highlighting the maritime perils.

On the debate topic– “Emerging Technologies and Maritime Security: Implications for Peace and Security” — he said, “Emerging technologies are fundamentally transforming the maritime domain,” and “equally, their misuse presents new challenges that demand our collective attention.”

“AI-enabled analysis of satellite imagery, radar and vessel-tracking data can improve maritime domain awareness and detect suspicious activities,” he said.

To enable these solutions, he offered India’s cooperation, which he said is “guided by the vision of SAGAR, Security and Growth for All in the Region”.

“India’s Information Fusion Centre-Indian Ocean Region (IFC-IOR), located near New Delhi, demonstrates the value of cooperation and information-sharing in strengthening maritime security,” he said.

“Our approach is guided by the vision of SAGAR — Security and Growth for All in the Region — and the broader commitment to inclusive maritime cooperation,” he said.

Calling on the international community to address emerging technological vulnerabilities, he said increasing digitalisation and automation also expose ports, vessels, communication networks and undersea infrastructure to cyber threats.

“The proliferation of autonomous systems raises complex questions of attribution, accountability and unintended escalation. We must therefore ensure appropriate safeguards, meaningful human oversight and clear responsibility in the deployment of emerging technologies,” he said.

  • Iran Guards Say Halted 3 Tankers After ‘Incidents’ In Strait Of Hormuz

Iran Guards Say Halted 3 Tankers After ‘Incidents’ In Strait Of Hormuz

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards on Friday said three oil tankers had been halted after encountering unspecified “incidents” or hitting mines while attempting to transit the Strait of Hormuz.

“Two offending oil tankers, one in the eastern part and the other in the western part of the Strait of Hormuz, which were attempting to pass through the unauthorised route, encountered incidents and were brought to a halt in the waters south of the strait,” the IRGC said in a statement.

The tankers had “switched off all their navigation and positioning systems and, with the support of the terrorist US military, were attempting to exit through the unauthorised route,” the statement added.

The Guards did not specify the nature of the incidents, which came a day after Iran’s armed forces said at least four tankers had stopped in the area after hitting mines.

They said Friday’s incidents occurred after the vessels received several radio warnings but disregarded them.

The IRGC later said in a separate statement that a supertanker carrying two million barrels of oil had come to a halt following an explosion “after striking a naval mine while navigating an unauthorised route through the Strait of Hormuz”.

“This is the third oil tanker to have exploded and caught fire today as a result of attempting to pass through an unauthorised route,” it added.

Iran’s army also reported that two tankers had been seen on fire after hitting mines in the eastern part of the waterway.

It was not immediately clear whether the two vessels reported by the army were the same as those reported by the IRGC.

Iranian forces have demanded that vessels use a designated route through the strait and coordinate their passage with the country’s armed forces, labelling a southern corridor closer to Oman’s shores as unauthorised.

Iran has restricted maritime traffic through the strategic waterway since the Middle East war began on February 28 with US-Israeli strikes on Iran that killed former supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The United States has in turn imposed a blockade on Iranian ports, further restricting Tehran’s ability to export oil and conduct trade.

  • How A BMW, Audi Race On UK Street Led To 28-Year Jail Term For 2 Indian-Origin Men

How A BMW, Audi Race On UK Street Led To 28-Year Jail Term For 2 Indian-Origin Men

    London:

Two Indian-origin men have been jailed for a total of 28 years after being convicted of causing the deaths of a mother and her four-year-old daughter as they walked to school in northern England. The jury found that car salesman Jasskamal Riyat, 37, was racing against Hardeep Bhachu, 29, who lost control and rammed into the pair as they walked along Scott Hall Road on their way to school in January 2023.

Justyna Hulboj, 27, and four-year-old Lena Czepczor died at the scene after being struck by Bhachu’s Audi TT RS. Riyat was caught on CCTV racing Bhachu in a BMW M135i immediately before the road collision.

Bhachu pleaded guilty in June 2024 to causing their deaths by dangerous driving and was sentenced to 12 years in prison, according to a Yorkshire Evening Post report.

Riyat denied responsibility, despite dashcam footage clearly showing him racing Bhachu, and was found guilty of two counts of causing death by dangerous driving and sentenced at the same court to 16 years’ imprisonment.

They were both also handed a six-year driving ban and will be required to take extended driving tests.

“A road is not a race track. A powerful car is not an invitation to test its limits on a public road,” Judge Ray Singh said, addressing the duo in court.

“The consequences of competitive driving at extreme speed can be, and in this case were, irreversible,” he said.

    The Race

During the trial, it was heard that the two Indian-origin men did not know each other. Minutes before the crash, Bhachu and Riyat had a conversation through the windows of their sports cars while waiting side-by-side at a traffic light.

Bhachu’s dashcam footage, as well as a recording on Riyat’s phone, established that the duo congratulated each other on the power of their cars, with Riyat reportedly “egging him on”.

They then began racing, with Riyat accelerating away first, followed by Bhachu, who had been travelling at almost 90mph on the 40mph road when he hit a kerb and lost control. His car mounted the pavement close to the Jaguar dealership, striking and killing the mother-daughter pair.

“A woman and her young daughter have died because of the actions of these men, and I know no sentence will ever feel enough to compensate for the lives that have been lost,” said Detective Inspector (DI) Paul Conroy of West Yorkshire Police’s Major Collision Enquiry Team.

“This sentencing hearing, though, does mark the end of a long criminal justice process for Justyna and Lena’s family.

“It is over two years since Bhachu admitted his part in this tragic incident, and I know that the wait for justice has taken its toll. My thoughts are firmly with them today,” he said.

  • Trump’s ‘Can Strike Iran In 10 Minutes’ Warning As Mojtaba Khamenei Updates ‘Target List’

Trump’s ‘Can Strike Iran In 10 Minutes’ Warning As Mojtaba Khamenei Updates ‘Target List’

    New Delhi:

President Donald Trump has said that the United States still has to “take care of” one or two targets in Iran as country’s supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei warned the US and Israel of fresh attacks.

“We’ve knocked out their nuclear. We still have to take care of, I would say one or two sites, but we can do that in 10 minutes,” Trump told reporters at his Florida residence on Saturday.

“You probably could look at Pickaxe Mountain, and you have to take care of that. We can do that all very quickly,” he said, referring to a site linked to Iran’s nuclear program.

He was also asked if the US would carry out a possible attack on Iran as soon as this week.

He, however, maintained that negotiations with Iran were “going fine but you know they’re not very reliable.”

Trump’s statement came after Mojtaba Khamenei, who has not been seen publicly since before he took the helm in March, after the killing of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in US-Israeli strikes, said that any threat will be met with an “immediate” response.

“Any level or type of threat must be met with an immediate, impactful and geographically unrestricted response,” he told top military commanders, according to a statement.

He also ordered commanders to update Iran’s target list to include “all types of tangible and intangible assets belonging to the American-Zionist enemy”.

This was the first reported meeting between Khamenei and top Iranian military brass.

Trump To Strike Iran After US Midterm Elections?

Donald Trump has in the past few days suggested he could launch fresh military action against Iran after the midterm elections in the US early next week.

“We may do another little Epic Fury,” Trump said last week, referring to the US name for its attacks on Iran.

The Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday that Washington had told several Gulf Arab countries to prepare for a possible “short, intense military campaign” against Iran after the US midterm elections on November 3.

The newspaper, citing people briefed on the conversations, said Trump had not made a final decision.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Saturday also warned that “we can achieve military objectives if we seek to”, adding that Trump had not made a decision on any fresh strikes.

He also slammed Tehran for “actively and openly” targeting commercial vessels for attack.

    The War In Middle East

The war in the Middle East began on February 28 when the US and Israel launched joint strikes on Iran, killing the country’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, along with senior military commanders.

In response, Tehran struck American bases in the Middle East and shut the Strait of Hormuz, the world’s most vital energy conduit, which sent the oil prices across the world skyrocketing.

On June 17, Trump and his Iranian counterpart, Masoud Pezeshkian, signed a 14-point deal to end the war. The agreement provided for an immediate cessation of military operations, including in Lebanon, and commited both countries to pursuing a final agreement within 60 days.

Trump, however, on July 8, said the deal was “over”. Tehran also suspended the memorandum of understanding a week later, accusing Washington of “violating all its commitments”.

Since then, Trump has reiterated that he’s in no rush to reach a deal.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whose party fell short of a majority in general elections on Tuesday, has in recent days also repeatedly vowed to topple the clerical state in Iran, following two major bombing campaigns against it since last year.

  • ‘Finding Kalash Not A Crime’: Court On Lilavati Hospital Black Magic Case

‘Finding Kalash Not A Crime’: Court On Lilavati Hospital Black Magic Case

    Mumbai:

In a significant development in the much-discussed Lilavati Hospital black magic case, the Greater Mumbai Sessions Court at Mazgaon has quashed the summons issued against Niket Vijay Mehta, observing that merely finding ritual pots (kalash) buried beneath the floor does not constitute a criminal offence.

Additional Sessions Judge Kunal Dhanaji Jadhav allowed Criminal Revision Application No. 01 of 2026 and set aside the order passed on December 8, 2025, by the Judicial Magistrate First Class, 12th Court, Bandra, Mumbai.

In fact, a complaint had been filed by Prashant Mehta, in which he claimed to be a permanent trustee of the Lilavati Kirtilal Mehta Medical Trust. In the complaint, Prashant alleged that after taking over the trust’s administration following a Supreme Court order dated September 18, 2023, eight copper pots were discovered beneath the floor of his cabin on September 21, 2024.

The pots contained human remains, rice, hair, ash and other materials suspected to be associated with black magic rituals, he alleged. In the complaint, he accused former management members, including Niket Mehta and six others, of performing occult practices to gain supernatural blessings and harm the trustees.

But the Sessions Court identified several shortcomings in the complaint and in the evidence that was presented. The court observed that there was no clear explanation of who buried the pots, when they were buried or what specific role each accused allegedly played.

The court also underlined the absence of forensic evidence that could establish whether the recovered bones were human remains or whether the hair and other materials were linked to any unlawful activity.

What is also important is that the judge remarked that burying ritual pots containing rice, sacred water, coins or other materials can form part of customary Hindu practices associated with Vastu and religious ceremonies.

The court asserted that such practices cannot automatically be treated as criminal acts without evidence of prohibited conduct or an intention to cause harm, deception or fear.

Concluding that the magistrate’s summoning order was legally unsustainable and lacked sufficient grounds, the Sessions Court allowed the revision application and quashed the summons against Niket Mehta.

  • On CCTV, MBA Student Steals Thar Tyres In Hyderabad, Took Tools From Puncture Shop

On CCTV, MBA Student Steals Thar Tyres In Hyderabad, Took Tools From Puncture Shop

    Hyderabad:

A 23-year-old MBA student has been arrested for allegedly stealing spare wheels and rims from parked cars across Telangana’s Hyderabad, with police recovering 15 wheels, including 12 from Mahindra Thar vehicles.

The investigation began after a complaint on October 20 over the theft of a spare wheel from a Mahindra Thar parked outside Galaxy Enclave Apartments in Rethibowli.

Police registered a case and examined CCTV footage, which showed a man — later identified as Soban Ali Khan — arriving on a scooter, removing the wheel and leaving.

The footage shows him sitting on his scooter and using his mobile phone. He then gets off and walks up to the black Thar, and tries to remove the spare tyre mounted on the rear tailgate. He, however, rushes back to his scooter when he spots another scooter coming towards him. As soon as the scooter crossed him, he again goes to the Thar and tries to remove the stepney. He then spots someone and again returns to his scooter.

For almost a minute, he stood next to his scooter, and kept looking up and down the lane.

He then gets off again, goes to the Thar and removes the tyre within seconds and flees on his scooter.

The police reviewed the CCTV footage and arrested Khan on Saturday.

Khan targeted vehicles, particularly Mahindra Thars, and used an unusual method to obtain tools.

“He would visit puncture repair shops, claiming he needed tools for a puncture and pay a refundable deposit of Rs 200 to Rs 300. After removing the vehicle’s spare wheel and rim, he would return the tools and collect his deposit,” the investigators said.

Police further said that he could “easily” remove the stepneys with a spanner.

The accused’s father works at a wheel-alignment shop, giving him familiarity with spare wheels.

Khan disclosed his alleged involvement in 11 theft cases registered across 10 police station limits, including two in Attapur. The stations named include Film Nagar, Langar House, Gudimalkapur, Saifabad, Chandrayangutta, Chaderghat, Chatrinaka, Meerpet and Narayanguda.

Two Ford Endeavour wheels and a Ford EcoSport wheel were also recovered from him.

Police said they would seek his custody to establish when the thefts began, whether more cases are linked to him and where the stolen wheels were sold. Investigators are also checking the alleged buyers and possible disposal network.

  • CJP Supports INDIA Bloc Rally But Keeps Distance, Says “Neutral Platform”

CJP Supports INDIA Bloc Rally But Keeps Distance, Says “Neutral Platform”

    New Delhi:

Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke on Saturday met Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee in Delhi and thanked her for supporting the outfit’s youth-led protests, while extending solidarity with the INDIA bloc rally on the “vote chori” charge.

He, however, said that the CJP would retain its independent identity and not join the Sunday protest by the opposition parties.

Dipke said he had called on Banerjee to express gratitude for her support to the outfit’s first protest at Jantar Mantar on the NEET paper leak issue and her backing when its leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were arrested by the Delhi Police.

“I just came to say thank you to Didi because the way she supported our first Jantar Mantar movement, she was always so strongly with the youth movement. When Saurav and Ashutosh were arrested by the Delhi Police, even then Didi stood with us very firmly,” he said.

Asked whether CJP would be present at Sunday’s rally at Ramlila Maidan, Dipke said the outfit supported the protest but would continue to function independently.

“We support the protest tomorrow, we stand in solidarity, but the Cockroach Janta Party is an independent organisation; it is a neutral platform, and we want to keep it that way,” he said.

He said the issue went beyond any one organisation and CJP would support all groups fighting against alleged vote theft.

“Anybody who will fight against this vote theft, we will support all organisations,” he said.

Banerjee, who is in Delhi and will attend Sunday’s rally, praised Dipke and the young activists for their role in the protests against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and the Election Commission.

“They have extended their full support for tomorrow’s rally, and we have extended all support to them as well. They are the pioneers and the founders of this movement. That we must remember,” she told reporters.

Banerjee said she was happy to meet the activists and acknowledged their efforts in sustaining the protests despite difficulties.

She also invited Dipke and the others to West Bengal and organise programmes there. Asked whether they would hold an event in Kolkata, she said the decision rested with them.

“That they will decide. It is their choice,” she said.

Dipke’s meeting with Banerjee came a day before the INDIA bloc rally at Ramlila Maidan, where opposition parties are set to raise the issue of alleged electoral irregularities and demand accountability from the Election Commission.

  • PM Modi Approves Northern Bullet Train Corridor: Delhi To Agra In 59 Minutes

PM Modi Approves Northern Bullet Train Corridor: Delhi To Agra In 59 Minutes

The government has given the green light to the new Northern Bullet Train Corridor, a crucial infrastructure project that will drastically cut travel times across northern India. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the approval, sharing that the high-speed rail network will bring major cities much closer. Under the proposed schedule, passengers will be able to travel from Delhi to Agra in just 59 minutes.

“The prime minister has approved the north corridor of the bullet train, which will change the lives of many,” Vaishnaw said while speaking before flagging off the new Vande Bharat Sleeper Express services between Varanasi and New Delhi.

“The vision for the bullet train shared by the prime minister will greatly benefit the youth, the middle-income group, and artisans in small-scale industries. People will remember Prime Minister Modi for the next 100 years for this initiative.”

    Key highlights of the project

Faster travel times: The corridor will also connect other major hubs, reducing travel time between Delhi and Lucknow, and extending connectivity further toward Varanasi and eastern regions.

Make in India Focus: The minister said that the construction, ranging from pillars to girders, will be completely indigenous, relying heavily on local engineering and domestic workforce capabilities. “The construction is progressing rapidly. It will be fully ‘Make in India’, built by the youth and welders of India,” Vaishnaw said.

Economic boost: As mentioned by the minister, the initiative is designed to benefit youth, local business owners, and middle-income commuters by making rapid transit more accessible.

    Reduced travel times

    • The journey from Delhi to Kanpur will take 1 hour and 45 minutes.
    • Delhi to Agra will take 59 minutes.
    • From Delhi to Lucknow will take 2 hours and 12 minutes.
    • Additionally, the trip from Lucknow to Varanasi will take 1 hour and 21 minutes.
    • Varanasi to Delhi will take 3 hours and 35 minutes.

Apart from Vaishnaw, UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said that a plan has been prepared to operate a bullet train between Delhi and Varanasi.

“This will allow the journey from Delhi to Varanasi to be covered in 3.5 hours – a mode of travel that will be simpler, more convenient, and more affordable than flying,” Adityanath said.

“Kashi now boasts a state-of-the-art railway station, which reflects the essence and character of Kashi itself. In Uttar Pradesh, 157 railway stations have been modernised. They are so well-designed that one feels as though they are in the VIP lounge of an airport.”

Vaishnaw also criticised the opposition party over the previous railway budget allocated to the state. “After Yogi Adityanath became the chief minister of UP, the budget has increased significantly; it has doubled, tripled, and then increased by 18 times. Today, UP is receiving a budget of Rs 20,000 crore,” the Union minister noted.

Further details regarding project timelines and ticket structures are expected to be shared soon.

  • Stalking, Rejected Proposal Behind Andhra Chainsaw Attack: Sources

Stalking, Rejected Proposal Behind Andhra Chainsaw Attack: Sources

The man accused of attacking two Class 10 girls with a chainsaw at a government school in Andhra Pradesh’s Anantapur district is said to be the uncle of the girl he allegedly targeted. Police sources said rejection of advances was behind the attack.

He is still on the run, and police have formed 12 to 15 teams to find him. The accused used to stalk the victim and had proposed to her in past.

On Saturday morning, a 21-year-old man allegedly walked into a classroom at the Zilla Parishad High School in Raptadu village carrying a chainsaw. According to preliminary information, the attack took place at about 10.30 am. Lessons were underway, and a teacher was in the room.

Both girls were injured, and one of them is in a critical condition. They were taken straight to the Government General Hospital in Anantapur. One of them is undergoing critical surgery there, and arrangements are being made to move her to a hospital in Bengaluru by air ambulance.

Preliminary police information names the accused as Hemanth alias Dummu. He is reportedly from Nagalur in Dharmavaram mandal of Sri Sathya Sai district.

The investigation into the sequence of events and the circumstances behind the attack is continuing.

    A Teacher Describes The Panic

The class teacher who was present at the scene, Rajeshwari, said staff were slow to understand what the man was carrying. Work was going on at the school, so they assumed someone had come to do a job.

“Classes were ongoing. The first period was completed, and the classes were continuing. All the children were studying,” the teacher said. “The classroom doors are generally kept open. Someone came through that door. Before we could realise what was happening, the incident with the boy took place.”

“Only one boy (the accused) came. He turned on the motor from outside and then came inside. The motor… we didn’t even understand what instrument it was,” the teacher added.

The teacher said staff first thought the sound was linked to the work on the premises.

“Since work was going on in the school, we thought perhaps some workers had come to do some work. He suddenly went among the children. He went right into the middle. Before the children could realise what was happening, or what had happened, and before they could get up and go outside… that is what we remember. He entered while they were still inside,” the teacher said.

“Sounds started coming from outside. He came towards the girls. Before we could figure out what was happening, it had already happened,” the teacher added.

One of the girls was sitting in the front row when the attack took place, according to the teacher’s account. There was little chance to step in before the assault unfolded, the teacher said.

Children ran in different directions as panic spread, which made it hard to know what had happened straight afterwards. Several of the older children and teachers, themselves in shock, were seen consoling each other.

“The children, poor things, were running here and there. Exactly how many people he attacked, I am unable to say. I am in a state of shock. What actually happened hasn’t even properly registered in my mind yet,” the teacher said. The teacher confirmed that another girl had also been injured.

“There were two teaching staff members. All the others are on election duty. Only four of us ladies are here, and after that, we have a few non-teaching staff, some vocational staff, and the headmistress is also there,” the teacher said.

    Counsellors Visit Students At Home

Education Minister Nara Lokesh said 20 mental health counsellors are visiting the homes of all 32 students of Class X-A, as well as girl students of Classes 8, 9 and 10. He wrote on X, “Following the deeply disturbing incident at Rapthadu, our priority is to ensure that every affected child feels safe and supported.”

“We have deployed a dedicated team of 20 mental health counsellors who are visiting the homes of all 32 students of Class X-A, as well as girl students of Classes 8, 9 and 10. They are speaking with the children and their parents, offering emotional support and helping them cope with the trauma,” he added.
